Pedagogical knowledge practices - Preparation

 |
Think back to when you first started teaching and how long it took you to prepare one lesson. As a seasoned teacher, you have built up a collection of resources and notes that make lesson planning seem effortless. Allocating time for preparation on the student teacher’s timetable provides opportunity for research or discussion about planning uncertainties. It is not helpful to hand over your preparation and resources too readily. New teachers need to begin their own process of gathering, organising and testing their own teaching resources. |
 |
- Provide the student teacher with a few examples of your preparation.
- Inform the student teacher of the various types of resources. Encourage the use of a variety of textbooks and Internet sources, including Open Educational Resources (OER).
- Give the student teacher a few ideas of where to locate new resources.
- Ensure the student teacher has a timeline for gathering and judging resources.
- Allow them to develop and execute their own lesson plans based on the resources they have collected.
- Share ideas and reflect on what worked or did not work for both of you.
- Promote the idea of visualising lessons in advance. This assists student teachers to focus and make adequate preparation.
- Commend the student teacher on any innovative or original idea. Even mentor teachers can still learn!
